Revolutionizing Architecture: The Future of Us Exhibition Pavilion

Advanced Architecture Laboratory's Innovative Design Celebrates Singapore's Golden Jubilee

Unveiling a unique blend of architecture and nature, the Singapore University of Technology and Design's Advanced Architecture Laboratory (AAL) presents a groundbreaking design for The Future of Us exhibition pavilion. This architectural marvel, which served as the capstone event for Singapore's Golden Jubilee celebrations, offers a glimpse into the future of architectural design and its potential in creating immersive, multi-sensory experiences.

The Future of Us exhibition pavilion is a testament to the innovative use of advanced design and fabrication techniques. Inspired by the dialogue between architecture and nature, the design employs light-filtering effects created by triangular aluminium panels of varying perforations. These intricate geometric patterns produce a unique play of light and shade, reminiscent of a tropical forest, offering visitors an immersive experience akin to a 'walk in an imaginary forest'.

The design's unique properties lie in its advanced computational tools, which analyze environmental data to generate a structural building skin that modulates the permeability of the envelope in terms of daylight and wind. With a surface area of approximately 2,000 square meters and a maximum span of 50 meters, the cladding consists of 11,000 individually sized, triangular panels. This complex yet harmonious design was realized using Parametric Design Tools, Structural Design, and Advanced Laser Cutting Fabrication for Custom Aluminum Panels.

The Future of Us exhibition pavilion was not just an architectural feat but also a collaborative triumph. The project involved the Future of Us Project Office, Ministry of National Development Singapore, S.H. Ng Consultants, Passage Projects, Pico Art International, and Protag Tetra Group. The project started in April 2015 and was completed in October 2015, showcasing the efficiency and precision of the design and construction process.

Despite the complex shape and cladding, the design was realized with high precision in a short amount of time, employing both traditional construction methods and advanced, digital pre-fabrication. This achievement was facilitated by a master model that enabled close collaboration between the architectural and structural consultants, allowing fabrication drawings for the structural steel and cut sheets for the cladding to be created in parallel.

For its exceptional design and innovative use of technology, The Future of Us exhibition pavilion was awarded Platinum in A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2016. This recognition underscores the design's contribution to advancing the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology, and its potential in shaping the future of architecture.
